Once upon a time, in a lively, bustling forest, there was a wonderful Animal School where all the little woodland creatures went to learn. Every year, the school hosted a grand Sports Day. With this year's big event just around the corner, all the animals were bubbling with excitement, warming up their muscles and getting ready to show off their very best skills.
The little bunny practiced the long jump, the little bird worked on her flying, and the squirrel perfected his tree climbing. Meanwhile, the elephant and the giraffe were out on the running track every single day, training as hard as they could.
However, Tommy the monkey lazily lounged on a tree branch. Munching on a banana and swishing his tail, he boasted, "Hmph! I run faster than anyone else in the whole forest! I have won first place at every Sports Day, so I don't even need to practice!"
Gary the giraffe and Paulie the elephant heard this and quietly exchanged a glance. They thought to themselves, "Tommy might be fast, but if we practice really hard, maybe we can beat him!"
And so, they woke up bright and early every morning. They ran lap after lap around the school track, their sweat falling—drip, drop, drip—onto the ground.
Finally, the big Sports Day arrived! The sun was shining brightly, colorful banners fluttered in the breeze, and the school field was packed with cheering animals.
The running race was the main event of the day. Everyone held their breath, their eyes glued to the runners at the starting line. Tommy stood right in the middle, holding his head high and saying with absolute confidence, "Just watch me! First place is all mine!"
"Ready, set, GO!" shouted the teacher, and the animals shot off like speeding arrows.
Just as expected, Tommy took the lead right away. His feet were so light and quick that it seemed like he was faster than the wind! Gary the giraffe stretched out his long legs, keeping a steady pace right behind him. Even though Paulie the elephant was quite heavy, every step he took was incredibly strong, and he slowly began to catch up.
Halfway through the race, Tommy started to feel that something wasn't quite right. His legs didn't feel so light and quick anymore, and he was huffing and puffing. He took a quick peek over his shoulder and was shocked to see that Gary and Paulie were right on his heels!
"How is this possible?" Tommy thought in a panic. He pushed as hard as he could to sprint ahead. But no matter how fast he tried to go, Gary’s long legs covered so much ground with every stride, and Paulie’s steps were as steady as a mountain. Slowly but surely, they both passed him.
At last, they crossed the finish line, and the whole crowd erupted in cheers! Gary the giraffe won first place, Paulie the elephant took second place, and Tommy, completely out of breath, crossed the line in third place.
Tommy hung his head, feeling grumpy and defeated. After the race, the teacher walked over, gently patted his shoulder, and said, "Tommy, you are a very fast runner, and that is a wonderful natural gift. But even with a great gift, you still need to practice to stay on top. Look at Gary and Paulie. They worked hard every single day, and that's why they did so well today."
Hearing this, Tommy's cheeks turned a little red. He nodded and said, "I understand now, Teacher. I'm going to practice just as hard as everyone else!"
From that day on, Tommy stopped being lazy. Every morning, he arrived at the track nice and early to practice running with Gary and Paulie. They would chat and laugh while they ran, and soon they became the very best of friends who shared everything with each other.
When Sports Day rolled around the following year, the forest was even more joyful and lively than before. This time, Tommy wasn't boastful at all. Instead, he, Gary, and Paulie all cheered each other on.
When the race began, the three best friends dashed forward like arrows leaving a bow. Their footsteps were strong and perfectly in sync. None of them fell behind, and to everyone's amazement, they crossed the finish line at the exact same time!
The crowd erupted into thunderous applause, and the teacher proudly announced, "Tommy, Gary, and Paulie are all tied for first place!"
Tommy, Gary, and Paulie looked at each other with big, happy smiles, and then gave each other a giant, joyful hug.
