The Dragon Boat Dream

The Dragon Boat Dream

Right next to the sparkling blue ocean stood a little school called Ocean Breeze Elementary. Every day during class, the students could hear the waves crashing against the sandy beach and smell the salty sea air.

For the first lesson of the day, their teacher stood at the chalkboard, introducing everyone to traditional holidays.

"Class," the teacher said, "does anyone know the story behind the Dragon Boat Festival?"

The students looked at each other and shook their heads. Nobody knew the answer.

The teacher smiled and gently explained, "A very long time ago, there was a poet named Qu Yuan who loved his country deeply. He worried about his nation so much that, in the end, he threw himself into the Miluo River."

The students listened quietly, feeling a little sad for the loyal poet.

The teacher then asked, "So, does anyone know what special food we eat during the Dragon Boat Festival?"

Lucas, a boy whose bright energy perfectly matched his hearty appetite, immediately shot his hand up. "Zongzi! Sticky rice dumplings filled with yummy pork and salty egg yolks!"

The teacher nodded. "That's right! Back then, people didn't want the fish and shrimp in the river to nibble on Qu Yuan. So, they wrapped sticky rice in bamboo leaves, making delicious dumplings, and tossed them into the water. People also paddled long boats that looked like giant, colorful wooden dragons. They would beat gongs and drums on the river in what we now call dragon boat racing. The loud noise and splashing were meant to scare the fish away!"

After she finished the story, the teacher played a video of a dragon boat race on the classroom's big screen.

Loud, heart-pounding drumbeats echoed from the speakers: Thump! Thump! Thump! Thump!

The river was filled with long wooden boats, each painted with a fierce, majestic dragon head. The paddlers moved in perfect harmony, pulling their wooden paddles with all their might. White water splashed high into the air, and the crowds on both riverbanks cheered at the top of their lungs. The energy was electric!

Sitting by the window, Frankie watched with wide-eyed wonder. His face lit up, completely captivated by the boats on the screen. He imagined himself sitting in one of them, gripping a paddle and soaring through the water against the ocean breeze. How cool would that be?

After school, Frankie couldn't stop thinking about the race. He ran into the living room, tugged on his older brother's sleeve while he watched TV, and declared, "I want to race in a dragon boat one day!"

His brother looked at Frankie's skinny little arms and burst out laughing. "You need massive muscles to paddle a dragon boat! Look at you—you're so small you probably couldn't even lift the paddle. How could you ever be in a race?"

Determined to prove him wrong, Frankie ran to his older sister, who was reading a book. "Sis, do you think it's possible for me to be in a dragon boat race?"

His sister patted him on the head and offered a sympathetic smile. "Frankie, you're a bit too skinny and too short. Those wooden paddles are really heavy. You should probably just forget about it."

Hearing his siblings' words, Frankie’s heart sank. His eyes welled up with tears.

But when he closed his eyes and pictured himself bravely riding the wind and waves, the spark in his heart flared up again. He told himself that no matter what challenges he faced, he was not going to give up on his dream.

After school the next day, Frankie walked down to an abandoned boatyard by the sea. In a dusty corner, he discovered an unwanted little wooden boat. He checked it over carefully and realized the hull didn't have any holes. It could still float!

Thrilled, he ran home to grab some supplies. He painted a big, bold dragon face on the front, pretending it was a mighty dragon boat. Once the paint was dry, Frankie used all his strength to push the little vessel into the shallow water at the beach. The ocean waves gently lapped against the wood, and the boat bobbed up and down, looking just like the real deal.

Next, he grabbed a piece of scrap wood to use as a paddle, hopped in, and started teaching himself how to paddle.

At first, Frankie had no idea what he was doing. No matter how furiously he splashed the water, the little boat refused to move forward. It just spun around in dizzying circles, and a few times, it rocked so hard he almost tumbled right into the sea.

But Frankie didn't lose heart. Every single day after that, as soon as school let out, he sprinted to the beach to practice. Slowly but surely, he figured out how to make the boat glide in a straight line, and his paddling got better and better.

One afternoon, a few classmates happened to be walking by the beach. They spotted Frankie, sweating and panting, paddling his little dragon-painted boat. It looked like so much fun that they ran over, shouting, "Frankie, we want to paddle with you!"

And just like that, a one-man practice session turned into a giant team adventure. Everyone worked together, calling out a rhythm and paddling forward as one united crew.

One day, the school principal was taking a stroll by the beach and saw the kids from afar, paddling with scrap wood in a beat-up old boat. The principal stroked his chin and chuckled. Thinking the children were just playing a silly game of pirates, he didn't pay them much mind.

Before they knew it, a whole month had passed. Not only were Frankie and his friends working together like a well-oiled machine, but their bodies had also grown incredibly strong from paddling every single day. Even skinny little Frankie had developed firm, tough muscles.

The little boat sliced through the water faster and faster, gliding across the surface like a flying fish. The harder they paddled, the more excited they got, and they joyfully gave their team a spectacular name: The Flying Fish Dragon Boat Team.

A few weeks later, the principal walked past the beach again. This time, he stopped dead in his tracks in total surprise. Closely watching the kids out on the water, he noticed their perfectly synchronized movements and the fierce determination in their eyes. He suddenly realized they weren't just goofing around!

The very next morning during assembly, the principal announced some amazing news to the whole school. Ocean Breeze Elementary was officially starting a dragon boat class! Not only had they hired an expert coach to teach them, but the school had also bought a real, full-sized dragon boat.

When Frankie and his friends heard the news, they leaped for joy right there on the playground and immediately sprinted to sign up.

During class, their professional coach taught them the right way to grip the paddle, how to use their core strength, and how to keep perfect time with the thumping drumbeats. Frankie studied harder and practiced more than anyone else.

Six months flew by in a flash, and the lively Dragon Boat Festival finally arrived. Seeing all the incredibly hard work the Flying Fish Dragon Boat Team had put in, the principal specifically entered them into the grand National Junior Dragon Boat Championship.

On the day of the race, the weather was bright and sunny. The riverbanks were packed with massive crowds, and the water was lined with brightly colored dragon boats. Wearing their matching team uniforms, Frankie and his friends were buzzing with energy, ready to board.

Just then, two familiar figures stepped out from the crowd—it was Frankie's older brother and sister! They walked up to him, their faces a little red, and apologized.

"Frankie, we're so sorry," his brother said. "We were wrong to ever doubt you."

His sister squeezed Frankie's hand and added, "You've gotten so strong, and we are incredibly proud of you. Give it everything you've got out there today!"

Frankie broke into a huge, happy smile. "Thanks, you guys!" he answered loudly. "I'm going to paddle with all my might!"

BANG!

The starting gun went off, and the sound of the drums was deafening.

Thump! Thump! Thump!

Following the beat of the drum, the Flying Fish Dragon Boat Team pulled their paddles through the water in perfect unison. Water splashed everywhere as they surged forward, leaving the other teams far behind.

Finally, amidst the roaring cheers of the crowd, Frankie led the Flying Fish Dragon Boat Team across the finish line in first place, winning the national championship!

Frankie hoisted the shiny trophy high into the air, the brightest smile bursting across his face. He knew right then that as long as you hold onto your dreams and put in the hard work, no matter what anyone else says, you will eventually find your own wonderful success.
