Once upon a time, in the sandy shallows of a sunny beach by the great blue sea, lived a crab. She spent her days watching the other ocean animals, wishing she could walk gracefully forward just like them. She thought a crab's way of walking sideways was simply too weird. Worse yet, the other animals would sometimes tease her, calling crabs "silly sideways shufflers." So, this crab made a big decision: she was going to change crab history forever!
Not long after, she became a mother to a sweet, tiny Little Crab. Mama Crab decided that this new generation would walk differently. Every single day, she patiently tried to teach Little Crab how to crawl straight ahead.
"We can't walk sideways anymore," she would tell him. "The other animals will laugh at us! From now on, we are going to walk gracefully and straight ahead, just like everyone else."
Little Crab was a very good boy who never wanted to disappoint his mama, so he practiced hard every single day. But no matter how much he tried, his steps were always wobbly, bobbly, and crooked. In fact, walking forward made him much slower than walking sideways! Mama Crab grew so worried watching his slow progress that sometimes she couldn't help but scold him.
As the days turned into weeks, Little Crab spent all his time struggling through these difficult walking lessons. He grew more and more confused. Why couldn't he just walk straight like the other animals? Every time he saw the disappointment in his mama's eyes, his little crab heart filled with guilt.
Then, one afternoon, Mama Crab scolded him again for not practicing properly. Finally, Little Crab gathered up all his courage.
"Mama," he said softly, "could you please try walking straight ahead to show me how? Maybe if I watch you do it, I'll finally understand."
Mama Crab thought this was a fair point, so she decided to demonstrate. She stepped forward, trying to walk in a perfectly straight line. But after just a few steps, she felt exhausted. Her shell wobbled, her legs tangled, and she tumbled right over! She suddenly realized just how incredibly hard it was for a crab to walk forward.
Little Crab looked at his mama and gently said, "You see, Mama? If walking forward is this hard and tiring for you, imagine how hard it is for me! Our bodies were made to walk sideways. That’s how we move quickly, safely, and steadily!"
Hearing this, a wave of shame washed over Mama Crab. She lowered her head, gently pulled Little Crab into a warm hug, and sighed.
"I am so sorry, my sweet child," she said. "I have been forcing you to do something that just isn't right for you, and I didn't even think about how it made you feel. You are absolutely right. We are crabs, and we were born to walk sideways! It’s nothing to be embarrassed about. We should be proud of exactly who we are."
From that day on, Mama Crab never asked Little Crab to walk straight ahead again. Instead, she taught him how to use his natural talents to zip across the sand sideways, faster and steadier than ever before! Little Crab finally found his confidence. He never felt ashamed of his sideways shuffle again—instead, he learned to celebrate exactly what made him wonderfully unique.
