The Forgotten Promise

The Forgotten Promise

Once upon a time, there was a little girl named Maisie who dreamed of having a puppy of her very own. Every time she walked past the local pet store, she would stop in her tracks. She would press her nose against the glass window, watching the adorable puppies tumble and play for hours on end.

On Maisie's birthday, her dad walked into the living room with a mysterious look on his face. "Maisie, I have a very special gift for you," he whispered.

From behind his back, he brought out a small woven basket. A soft whimper came from inside. Maisie’s eyes grew wide with excitement. With a warm smile, her dad lifted a corner of the blanket, and a tiny, fluffy white puppy popped its head out, looking up at Maisie with big, watery eyes. Maisie gasped, covering her mouth with her hands, her eyes sparkling with pure joy.

"This is our newest family member," Dad said gently. "But Maisie, you have to promise me that you will take very good care of him. As you grow up, you will make many, many friends. But to a little dog, you are his only friend in the whole wide world. So, no matter what happens, you must never leave him feeling lonely. Do you promise?"

Maisie nodded eagerly. "I promise, Dad!" she said earnestly. "I'll take the best care of him!"

She carefully scooped the tiny puppy into her arms and asked, "What is his name?"

Dad gently ruffled Maisie's hair. "He is your little sidekick now. You get to name him."

The puppy had big, soulful eyes. He was round, white, and so soft to the touch that he looked exactly like a puffy piece of candy. Right then and there, Maisie decided to name him Marshmallow.

Maisie and Marshmallow became absolutely inseparable. Wherever Maisie went, Marshmallow was right behind her, his little tail wagging happily. They ate together, played together, and shared countless joyful days.

A year later, it was time for Maisie to start elementary school, where she met lots of exciting new friends. Every morning after Maisie left for class, Marshmallow would sit quietly by the front door, eagerly waiting for her to return. However, when the final bell rang and Maisie finally came home, she was always busy chatting with her new classmates or running off to play, completely forgetting about the little dog waiting for her.

A few times, Marshmallow trotted over to her, hoping to play. But Maisie would sigh and say impatiently, "Marshmallow, I'm busy. Stop bothering me." Heartbroken, Marshmallow would lower his head and walk slowly back to his little doggie bed, all by himself.

As the days turned into weeks, Marshmallow grew lonelier and lonelier. Maisie was his only friend in the world, and now that friend didn't seem to want him around anymore. His tiny heart filled with sadness. Sometimes, he would just sit quietly by the window, watching the world outside with a helpless, sorrowful look in his eyes.

Then, one day, something changed. Marshmallow seemed unusually tired. He didn't bounce around like he used to. Maisie's mom noticed something was wrong and rushed him to the veterinarian.

After a careful check-up, the doctor delivered some sad news: Marshmallow was very sick and needed a serious operation. The surgery was scheduled for a week later to give him time to build up his strength. The doctor looked gently at Mom and said, "This procedure is very risky. There is only a fifty percent chance he will pull through. Please, spend as much time with him as you can over the next week."

When Mom told Maisie the news, Maisie froze in shock. She ran to find Marshmallow and saw him curled up alone in a dark corner of the house, his eyes looking glassy and tired. In that moment, she realized how terribly she had been ignoring him. Her dad's words from that very first day echoed in her mind:

"As you grow up, you will make many friends. But to a little dog, you are his only friend."

A huge wave of guilt washed over Maisie, and the tears began to fall. Kneeling down, she choked back a sob and whispered, "I'm so sorry, Marshmallow. I'm so sorry I ignored you. Please, please get better. I will stay right by your side from now on."

For the next seven days, Maisie devoted every single second of her free time to Marshmallow. They went on gentle walks, played softly on the rug, and snuggled up to sleep together. Slowly, a happy little sparkle returned to Marshmallow's eyes, as if he had found his lost joy once again.

The day of the surgery finally arrived. Maisie sat nervously in the waiting room outside the operating room doors, praying with all her heart. Marshmallow, you have to make it. I promise I will never leave you feeling lonely ever again. The hours ticked by so slowly that it felt like an entire century had passed.

At long last, the heavy doors opened. The doctor walked out, gave Maisie a warm smile, and said the magic words: "The surgery was a success."

Maisie burst into happy tears, rushing in to gently hug her brave little dog. From that day forward, Maisie never ignored Marshmallow again. She even introduced him to all her classmates, making sure he was always a part of their games. The bond between Maisie and Marshmallow grew stronger than ever, and Marshmallow never, ever felt lonely again.
