A Thousand Dandelions

A Thousand Dandelions

Once upon a time, in a faraway kingdom, there lived a gentle little girl named Lyric. She had long, golden hair and a smile as sweet as honey. Tragically, she suffered from a rare and mysterious illness that left her so weak she couldn't even leave her bed. Her only comfort was gazing out the window at the patch of bright sunflowers her mother had planted in the yard, dreaming of the day she could run freely across the green meadows like the other children.

Desperate for a cure, Lyric's mother sought out every renowned doctor in the kingdom. Yet, after examining the little girl, each physician would sigh and deliver the same grim news: "This child is just too fragile. I'm afraid there is no medicine that can heal her. She doesn't have much time left; you must prepare yourself."

Though her heart was shattered, Lyric's mother refused to give up. She had heard whispers of a witch who possessed ancient magic, living deep within the darkest part of the forest. Gathering all her courage, the mother ventured into the shadowy woods alone. She walked for what felt like an eternity until she finally discovered the witch's cottage, hidden among the densest trees.

As soon as she saw the witch, the mother begged her to save her daughter's life.

The witch listened, then spoke slowly. "I can save your daughter, but you must give me the most precious thing in your life in exchange."

Without a moment's hesitation, the mother replied, "As long as Lyric gets well, I am willing to give up everything—even my own life!"

The witch offered a mysterious smile. "I do not want your life. I want your memories. You will forget everything. You will forget who you are, and you will forget you ever had a daughter. But your child will live a long, healthy life."

The mother froze, tears streaming down her face. To forget her beloved little girl—what a heavy price to pay! But the moment she pictured Lyric running happily through the green meadows, her heart filled with bravery. She wiped away her tears and nodded firmly. "For Lyric, I will do it."

The witch pointed out the window to a field blanketed in fluffy, snow-white dandelions. She whispered, "Pick one thousand of these dandelion puffs for me before the sun rises. They will turn your love into the life force your daughter needs."

The mother immediately rushed out to the field and began gathering the delicate stems as fast as she could. Even as the sharp blades of grass cut her fingers, she ignored the pain. Just before sunrise, she managed to collect exactly one thousand dandelions and brought them back to the witch's cottage.

The witch blew softly on them. The white seeds drifted up into the air, traveling all the way back to the kingdom and floating right through Lyric's open bedroom window.

And then, something miraculous happened.

As the pale seeds softly landed on Lyric's cheeks, she instantly felt a rush of strength flow through her entire body. She tossed off her blankets, stepped out of bed, and spun joyfully around her room. She was truly cured!

Eager to share the wonderful news, Lyric searched every corner of the house and looked anxiously outside, but her mother was nowhere to be found. She waited and waited. Months went by, but her mother never returned.

During that lonely time, Lyric noticed something strange: no matter where she went, a few tiny dandelion seeds always swirled softly around her.

Days turned into years, and Lyric blossomed into a beautiful, graceful young woman. However, she still carried that one unsolved mystery. The mystical dandelion seeds had stayed by her side for years, never once fading. At first, Lyric tried to discover why they followed her, but she never found an answer. Over time, she simply grew accustomed to their comforting presence.

Through all those years, Lyric never stopped looking for her mother. She asked everyone she met across the kingdom, but nobody knew where the woman had gone.

One sunny spring day, a handsome prince happened to visit Lyric's village. He was instantly captivated by her kindness and beauty. The prince fell deeply in love with Lyric and asked her to marry him. Lyric said yes, though her only regret was that her mother wouldn't be there to share her wedding day.

Lyric moved into the prince's castle to prepare for their wedding, which was to take place in exactly a month.

One afternoon, while walking past a bakery in town, Lyric spotted a figure who looked incredibly familiar. It was a woman with kind eyes and graying hair. It was her mother—the very person she had missed every single day!

Overjoyed, Lyric rushed up to her, tears welling in her eyes, and cried out, "Mother! It's me! It's Lyric!"

But the woman looked at her in confusion. In a voice that was kind but distant, she said, "Young lady, you must have the wrong person. I don't have a daughter."

Those words broke Lyric's heart. She knew for certain that it was her mother, but she couldn't understand why she didn't recognize her. Upon returning to the castle, a heartbroken Lyric told the prince all that had happened.

The prince held her close and said tenderly, "Please don't be sad. I've heard that in the deepest part of the forest, there is an all-knowing witch. Perhaps we can ask her, and she might give us the answers we need."

Desperate to solve the mystery, Lyric, accompanied by her prince, ventured into the dark forest and found the witch's cottage. When the witch saw Lyric, it was as if she had been expecting her. She revealed the truth of what had happened all those years ago.

"Your health was bought with your mother's most precious memories. She poured every ounce of her love for you into those one thousand dandelions. That is why they became your guardians, staying by your side day and night."

Tears streamed down Lyric's face. She finally understood that her mother's love had never left her—it had simply transformed into the dandelions that watched over her. Choking back sobs, she begged, "Please, is there any way to bring her memories back? I will pay any price!"

The witch sighed softly and shook her head. "That was my most powerful magic. There is absolutely no way to break it."

Hearing this, Lyric's heart sank. She realized just how heavy a price her mother had paid so she could grow up healthy and strong. But even though the witch said the magic couldn't be broken, Lyric held onto a tiny glimmer of hope. She was determined to try.

Lyric went straight back to the bakery and found her mother kneading dough. Gathering her courage, she walked up to her, unclasped the stone necklace she wore, and delicately held it out. Her voice trembled as she asked, "Mother, you made this for me out of the prettiest stones in the forest for my fifth birthday. You told me it was my lucky stone. Do you remember?"

Startled by the sudden approach, the mother paused her work. She looked closely at the necklace, but her eyes remained completely blank.

"This is a very lovely necklace," she said, "but please, why do you keep calling me Mother?"

"Because you are my mother!" Lyric insisted. "We used to live together in the little house on the hill, and you planted a whole field of sunflowers just for me!"

The mother frowned, thinking hard for a long moment, but ultimately sighed and shook her head. "I'm so sorry. I don't remember any house like that, and I don't remember ever planting sunflowers. You must have confused me with someone else."

Seeing that her mother still couldn't remember her, Lyric couldn't hold back her tears. They rolled down her cheeks, her heart aching with sorrow. Just then, the few dandelions that always stayed by Lyric's side drifted softly down to her hand, as if they were trying to comfort her.

Looking at the seeds, Lyric suddenly remembered the witch's words: "She poured every ounce of her love for you into those one thousand dandelions."

With trembling hands, Lyric carefully cupped one of the snow-white dandelion seeds. Through her tear-filled eyes, she offered it to her mother and asked with a choked voice, "Then... do you remember these dandelions? This is your love for me."

With that, she delicately blew the love-filled dandelion toward her mother.

At that very moment, a true miracle occurred.

The dandelion transformed into thousands of tiny, sparkling lights that floated toward her mother, melting into her chest one by one. In an instant, the confusion in her mother's eyes cleared away, replaced by a profound wave of recognition as the dusty, locked-away memories flooded back. She looked at the young woman standing in front of her, reached out a trembling hand, and tenderly stroked her cheek as tears fell from her eyes.

"Lyric... my sweet, precious daughter!"

They hugged each other tightly, crying tears of pure joy. It turned out that the most powerful thing in the world wasn't the witch's magic after all. It was the bond between a mother and her daughter—a love so strong it could cross any obstacle and never fade away. Miraculously, this love had broken the witch's spell.

Soon after, Lyric married her prince exactly as planned. And at the grand royal wedding, her mother sat right by her side, wearing the happiest smile in the world. From that day forward, they were never parted again, and they lived happily ever after.
