Once upon a time, high up in the distant sky, there was a beautiful Cloud Kingdom. The clouds there floated freely every day. Sometimes they would gather together and turn into all sorts of shapes—a tall mountain, an ocean, or even animals! Among them was one tiny cloud who especially loved shaping itself into a fluffy sheep, because it thought sheep were the softest and cutest things in the whole world.
One day, while the little cloud was playing tag in the sky, a strong gust of wind blew it completely off balance. Whoosh! The little cloud tumbled right out of the sky and down to the earth below.
When it opened its eyes, it realized it had magically turned into a real, live little lamb, standing in the middle of a wide, green meadow.
The little cloud looked down in surprise at its four new legs planted on the soft grass. It felt so strange and exciting! As it waddled along, it met a flock of sheep munching on the grass.
The sheep looked at the little cloud and thought it looked a little funny. Its body looked exactly like a puffy white cloud, but it had the face and legs of a lamb.
"Who are you?" asked one of the sheep curiously.
"I... I'm a cloud, but now I've turned into a lamb," the little cloud answered shyly.
The sheep thought this was wonderful and invited the little cloud to join their flock. From then on, the little cloud lived with them, running, grazing, and playing in the meadow every day. Because it looked half like a cloud and half like a sheep, everyone decided to name it Cloudy.
Cloudy absolutely loved life on the ground. The meadow breeze felt cozy, the grass was wonderfully soft, and the sheep were such good friends. Cloudy almost completely forgot about ever being a cloud in the sky.
Meanwhile, back in the Cloud Kingdom, the other clouds realized one of their own was missing. The Cloud King was very worried, so he sent a Cloud Messenger down to Earth to find the lost little cloud.
The Cloud Messenger disguised himself as a big mountain goat and trotted into the meadow. He asked around and finally found Cloudy.
"Cloudy, you must come back to the sky with me!" the Cloud Messenger said sternly.
"But why? I have such a great life here, and I don't want to leave my friends," Cloudy said, shaking its little head.
"You are a cloud, and your job is to bring rain to the earth," the Messenger explained. "If you don't come back, this meadow will dry up from lack of water, and your friends will suffer."
Cloudy felt torn. It really, really didn't want to say goodbye to its fluffy friends, so it shook its head again and decided to stay.
Seeing that Cloudy's mind was made up, the Messenger knew that arguing wouldn't help. He gave a soft sigh and returned to the sky alone.
Days turned into weeks, and not a single drop of rain fell. The green grass began to turn brown and wither, and the sparkling river slowly dried up. The sheep couldn't find enough food or water, and they grew weaker and weaker.
Watching its friends struggle made Cloudy feel terribly sad. It finally understood that it had to go back to the sky to save the meadow and the animals it loved.
"I have to go now," Cloudy told the sheep.
"Where are you going?" the sheep asked.
"I'm a cloud, and it's my job to bring rain to the earth. If I don't go back, you will all suffer," Cloudy answered, with a little tear in its eye.
Even though the sheep didn't want to say goodbye, they knew this was the only way they could all survive. They gave Cloudy warm, fuzzy hugs and bade it a fond farewell.
Cloudy called out to the sky and floated back up to its home. The moment it transformed back into a fluffy cloud, thick rain clouds gathered around, and a wonderful, gentle rain began to fall.
The rain nourished the dry meadow. The grass turned bright green again, and the river flowed with fresh water. The sheep cheered with joy, looking up at the sky with hearts full of gratitude.
From that day on, whenever the meadow needed rain, Cloudy would float by in the sky and sprinkle down sweet, refreshing raindrops. Whenever the sheep looked up, they could always spot the cloud shaped perfectly like a little lamb, and it filled their hearts with warmth. Cloudy couldn't stay on the ground with the sheep forever, but it knew its true purpose was to protect this beautiful meadow and the friends it loved so much. And that wonderful mix of love and responsibility made Cloudy feel happier than ever before.
