The Duck in a Sweater

The Duck in a Sweater

Once upon a time, in a quiet, peaceful countryside, there lived a little girl named Olivia. Olivia had a very special pet: a little duck.

From the very moment the duck pecked his way out of his shell, the two were absolutely inseparable. Every day, Olivia would bring him fresh, crisp greens from the garden to eat, splash around with him in the little backyard pond, and even read him bedtime stories. Everywhere Olivia went, her duck waddled right behind her.

One day, Olivia turned to her pet, bubbling with excitement.

"I'm taking you to school with me tomorrow!" she cheered. "I want all my classmates to see how beautiful you are. I even made a brand-new outfit just for you—you're going to love it!"

With that, Olivia pulled out a brightly colored sweater and gently slipped it over the duck's head.

But the duck did not feel beautiful. He felt terribly uncomfortable. The sweater wrapped tightly around his tummy, making it hard for him to stretch his wings or even walk properly. Still, seeing how happy Olivia was, he didn't have the heart to complain. He just stayed quiet and put up with it.

The next morning, Olivia proudly walked into school with her brightly dressed duck. As soon as the other children saw him, they crowded around in amazement.

"Wow! What a beautiful duck!" they gasped. "That outfit is so cute!"

Olivia beamed from ear to ear, her heart swelling with pride.

On the inside, though, the duck was miserable. The clothes made him feel clumsy and awkward. His soft feathers were smushed down tightly, and he felt like he couldn't even take a proper duck-breath.

That night, the duck decided he had finally had enough. While everyone was sleeping, he wriggled and wiggled until he popped right out of that itchy, tight sweater. Then, he snuck out to the yard and buried it deep in the garden soil.

When Olivia opened the back door the next morning, she saw her duck zooming happily around the yard in nothing but his feathers. His sweater was nowhere to be found!

Olivia searched frantically, high and low, but the outfit was completely gone. She felt so sad that big, shiny tears began to well up in her eyes.

When her mom saw her looking so heartbroken, she knelt down and asked what was wrong. Sniffling, Olivia told her mom everything that had happened.

Mom gently stroked Olivia's hair and said softly, "Oh, Olivia, I know you wanted your little duck to look beautiful, but did you ever wonder if he actually wanted to wear clothes? Ducks already have their own gorgeous feathers, and that's exactly what they need. Wearing a sweater probably felt very uncomfortable for him."

Suddenly, Olivia understood. She walked over to him, gave him a gentle, feather-soft hug, and whispered, "I'm so sorry. I didn't think about how you felt. I promise I will never make you wear clothes again."

The duck let out two happy quacks, as if to say, "That's okay, Olivia! I forgive you."

From that day on, Olivia never dressed him up again. She let him run, splash, and swim exactly the way a duck should. The duck was happier than ever, and the two best friends continued to share wonderful adventures every single day.
