The Eraser Saves the Day

The Eraser Saves the Day

It was late at night, and the whole house was perfectly quiet. Everyone was fast asleep. But inside the little pencil case sitting on the desk, there was a soft rustle-rustle sound.

You see, whenever the moon came up and their little owner fell asleep, the school supplies inside the pencil case would sneak out to have a party!

Pencil stretched his long, yellow body and let out a big yawn. "I really want to draw! Our boy forgot to put his drawing paper away today. Let's draw a picture for him!"

Red Crayon popped out and cheered, "Oh, yes, yes! I'm going to draw a big, bright sun!"

Green Crayon rolled out right behind her. "And I'll draw the green, green grass!"

Just then, everyone turned to look at a small, soft, white square sitting quietly in the corner. His name was Whit the Eraser.

Pencil gave a little snort and teased him, "Hey, Whit! What are you hiding back there for? Look at you. You're completely white and don't have a single drop of color to share. You're pretty useless."

Red Crayon giggled, too. "It's true. Whit can't draw lines, and he can't color things in. All he does is roll around on the paper and make all our hard work disappear. What a useless school supply!"

The other Crayons joined in and laughed. "Haha! Yeah, Whit is no use at all!"

Hearing this made Whit feel incredibly sad. He hung his head, too shy to look at anyone. Oh, he thought to himself, maybe they're right. I really can't do anything. I'm just a useless eraser...

Meanwhile, Pencil began to dance across the white paper, sketching a beautiful, grand castle. The Crayons twirled right behind him, coloring the castle a brilliant red and the grass a lush, beautiful green.

But suddenly, something terrible happened!

Pencil was having so much fun drawing a fluffy cloud that he accidentally let out a giant sneeze. Achoo! Oh no! He slipped, and right next to the perfect, round cloud, he drew an ugly, long, dark scribble. It looked like the cloud had grown a strange, messy tail!

Pencil's face went pale with panic. "Oh no! I ruined the picture! This dark line is so ugly. What are we going to do?"

The Crayons stopped their dancing. "Oh dear," they sighed. "Our boy is going to be so sad when he sees this tomorrow."

Everyone was so worried that they were about to cry. Their perfect masterpiece was ruined.

Right then, a tiny, timid voice piped up from the corner. "Um... let me give it a try, okay?"

It was Whit! He hopped right onto that ugly black scribble, wiggled his little square body with all his might, and rubbed back and forth, back and forth. Before long, the ugly black scribble completely vanished!

The fluffy cloud was perfectly neat and clean again, looking just as good as new.

For a few seconds, everyone was completely silent.

Then, with his cheeks blushing brightly, Pencil walked sheepishly over to Whit. He bowed his head and said very seriously, "I'm so sorry, Whit. I never should have called you useless. If you weren't here, I never could have fixed my mistake. You're actually the most amazing school supply of us all."

The Crayons gathered around and gave Whit a gentle hug. "We're sorry, too, Whit. We promise we will never tease you again. You are our very best friend."

Hearing their kind words made Whit feel all warm and fuzzy inside. He smiled brightly. "That's okay! It takes all of us working together to make the very best picture!"

That night, when everyone squeezed back into the pencil case to go to sleep, Pencil and the Crayons made sure to save the softest, coziest spot right in the middle just for Whit.

And as he drifted off, Whit thought it was the best, warmest sleep he had ever had.
