The Prank That Went Too Far

The Prank That Went Too Far

Once upon a time, in a bright, sun-drenched forest filled with the sound of happy laughter, lived a little monkey named Dodo. With his big, dark eyes and very long tail, Dodo was the most energetic and mischievous youngster in the entire forest. His clever little head was always spinning with new ideas for playing pranks on everyone. To him, seeing others startled and confused was the funniest thing in the whole wide world.

One sunny morning, he crept up to where the squirrel kept his winter treats. One by one, he swapped all the hard-earned pinecones for smooth, round stones. When the squirrel came home, he could only stare in utter disbelief. Another time, Dodo perfectly mimicked the call of a cuckoo bird right next to where the big bear was taking his afternoon nap. The sudden noise woke the bear with a start, while Dodo quickly scrambled up a tree, covering his mouth and giggling uncontrollably.

Even though the other animals kindly asked him over and over to stop playing these tricks, Dodo never thought he was doing anything wrong. He would always think to himself, "Oh, come on, it’s just a little joke!"

Then came a warm afternoon when the sky suddenly turned dark. Heavy, purple-gray storm clouds rolled in, signaling that a great big thunderstorm was about to break. Deep in the woods, the old tortoise leaned on his walking stick, looked up at the sky, and let out a heavy sigh.

"Oh dear," he whispered. "There is a hole in my roof. I must hurry and patch it up with my big banana leaf before the rain starts."

He shuffled back inside and found the giant banana leaf resting against the wall. He felt quite relieved, thinking how lucky he was to have saved this perfect leaf; otherwise, he would be in big trouble today.

Just then, Dodo came swinging by on a vine, and a brand-new, naughty idea popped into his head. Waiting for the perfect moment when the tortoise turned his back, Dodo snatched the giant leaf and dashed up into the leafy green branches to watch what would happen.

When the old tortoise turned around and saw the leaf was gone, he rubbed his eyes, unable to believe it. "Wait, where is my leaf? I am certain I left it right here!" He grew very worried and began searching everywhere, but the leaf was nowhere to be found.

Minutes ticked away, the clouds grew thicker, and the woods turned darker. The tortoise paced in circles, trembling with anxiety. "Whatever shall I do? What shall I do? The rain is coming!"

No sooner had he spoken than heavy, plump raindrops began to fall—drip, drop, drip, drop. Suddenly, the sky opened up, and the rain came pouring down in sheets. With no time left to look for his leaf, the elderly tortoise could only watch helplessly as the driving rain gushed straight through the hole in his roof and into his cozy little home.

Before long, water flooded the floor. The tortoise’s favorite rocking chair, the little wooden table he had crafted with his own hands, and his precious collection of storybooks by his bedside—everything was soaked and floating in the water.

When the storm finally passed, he sat on his damp doorstep, looking at his ruined furniture, and began to cry bitterly. He was very old, and everything in his home had been gathered slowly over a lifetime. Now, it was all destroyed. Tears rolled down his wrinkled cheeks without stopping.

Hiding up in his tree, Dodo saw that the old tortoise’s home had turned into a miniature pond, and heard the heartbreaking sound of his sobs. At that exact moment, Dodo felt a sharp, painful squeeze in his chest, and all his desire to laugh completely vanished. He had truly thought it was just a silly, harmless joke, and he never imagined it would cause the tortoise so much pain. His face flushed bright red with shame, and his heart filled with deep regret.

He climbed down from the tree, bowed his head, and walked slowly over to the doorstep. In a tiny, trembling voice, he said, "Grandpa Tortoise, I am so, so sorry. I hid your banana leaf. I only wanted to play a joke..."

The old tortoise lifted his tear-stained face and looked at the deeply ashamed little monkey, but he didn't say a word.

Seeing how sad the tortoise was made Dodo feel even worse. He rushed into the bushes, fetched the giant banana leaf, and scrambled up onto the roof. Using his hands and feet, he clumsily but carefully patched up the hole. After that, he worked hard to scoop all the water out of the house and carried the soggy furniture outside, piece by piece, to dry in the warm sunshine.

As the old tortoise watched the little monkey work so hard, bustling about and sweating from head to toe, his anger melted away. He could see that Dodo was truly sorry from the bottom of his heart.

From that day on, Dodo never played a mean trick on anyone again. He finally understood that true happiness is never found by making others sad, and he learned how to treat everyone with kindness and respect. All the animals in the forest were absolutely delighted to see that the mischievous little monkey had finally grown up.
