Adventures All By Myself

Adventures All By Myself

In a cozy little house lived a little boy named Skyler. Skyler’s absolute favorite thing to do in the whole wide world was to play with his mommy. He loved building towering castles of wooden blocks with her, and he loved pushing his toy train, the two of them choo-chooing around the living room together.

But Skyler’s mommy was always very busy. Sometimes she had to be like Wonder Woman, sweeping and scrubbing until the house was spotless. Other times, she had to be a magician, whipping up a delicious-smelling dinner in the kitchen.

"Mommy, can you play with me for just a little bit?" Skyler asked, tugging at the edge of her shirt, his eyes full of hope.

His mommy knelt down, gently patted his head, and said softly, "Oh, my sweet boy, Mommy is just so busy right now. Look at this giant pile of laundry I still have to fold. Can you play by yourself for a little while?"

Skyler pouted. He felt so bored. What was the fun of playing all by himself? Without Mommy’s help, his block castles never seemed to get very tall. And without Mommy as a passenger, his toy train just didn't seem to go very fast. He plunked himself down on his play rug, stared out the window at a little bird, and let out a big, heavy sigh.

Mommy’s voice floated over to him. "Just give it a try! Sometimes, when you play all by yourself, you might discover a magical surprise!"

"A surprise?" Skyler tilted his head, wondering what she meant.

He looked down at the rug underneath him. It was just an ordinary play rug, printed with winding roads, a green park, and a few cute little houses. He picked up his favorite shiny red toy car and placed it right on the rug’s painted road.

"All right," he whispered to himself. "I guess I'll just go on a driving adventure all by myself."

And as his little fingers pushed the red car, letting it glide slowly down the winding path... something completely magical happened!

In his imagination, the printed roads, the park, and the little houses on the rug suddenly sprang to life! He imagined he was a daring race car driver, sitting right inside that shiny red car. His little hands gripped the steering wheel, and the flat toy road in front of him transformed into a wide, open highway where he could zoom as fast as he wanted!

"Wow!" Skyler gasped.

He drove his little car, carefully steering around the roundabout on the rug, and even waved to a toy puppy sitting by the curb. He parked his car in a parking garage made of wooden blocks, then ran over to the rug’s park. He swung on an invisible swing set and zoomed down the longest, twistiest slide ever.

Next, he decided to visit his toy bear, who lived all the way on the other side of the rug. He hopped back in his car, drove through a dark mountain tunnel made of stacked-up storybooks, and crossed a rushing river made from a crinkled blue towel.

Knock, knock, knock. He gently tapped on the door of the toy bear's little plastic house.

"Hello there, Little Bear!" Skyler said happily.

And he imagined the bear smiling right back and answering, "Hello there, Skyler! Would you like to come inside for a nice warm cup of honey tea?"

Just like that, Skyler went on adventure after adventure, right there on his magical play rug. One minute he was a brave race car driver, and the next, he was a fearless explorer.

When Mommy finally finished folding the laundry and walked over, she found Skyler happily lying on his tummy. He was pushing his little car and whispering to himself, "Don't worry, citizens! Super Skyler is here to save the day!" He had the biggest, brightest smile on his face.

Mommy looked at him and smiled, too.

From that day on, Skyler discovered that playing by himself could actually be tons of fun. He could create endless excitement right inside his very own little world. Of course, he still absolutely loved playing with his mommy.

But now, whenever Mommy was busy, he would run over to his magical play rug, get ready, and whisper, "My adventure is about to begin!"

And just like that, the whole room would turn into the greatest playground in the world.
