The Night of the Stolen Cheese

Once upon a time, Cat and Mouse were the very best of friends. They shared a cozy little home and went out searching for food together every single day. Whenever they found a tasty treat, they always played fair and square, splitting it right down the middle so they each had exactly half.

Now, Mouse was always in a hurry. The second he got his paws on his share—chomp, gulp, burp!—he would eat it right up. Cat, on the other hand, was much more patient. He liked to save his food, tucking it away to enjoy later when his tummy was truly rumbling.

One day, a fierce, howling storm swept through the town. The wind blew and the rain poured, making it terribly hard to find anything to eat. They searched and searched until finally, just as the sun was setting, they managed to find one tiny piece of yellow cheese.

Just like always, they cut the cheese into two equal pieces. Mouse took his half and ate it up in one big bite. Poof! All gone! Cat’s tummy was growling loudly, but he decided to be smart. He saved his piece for the very next morning, knowing he would need the energy to brave the storm again.

That night, Cat was snoring softly in his warm bed, fast asleep. But poor Mouse tossed and turned. His empty belly grumbled and squeaked so much that he couldn't sleep a wink! He stared at Cat's beautiful piece of cheese. He tried to be good, he really did, but he just couldn't help himself.

Mouse crept over to Cat's bed on quiet little paws. He took a tiny, teeny nibble. When Cat didn't even stir, Mouse kept eating until he had gobbled up the whole thing!

The next morning, Cat woke up, gave a big, long stretch, and got ready for his yummy breakfast. But when he reached for his cheese, it was gone! He searched high and low, under the rug and behind the chairs. Finally, he looked at Mouse and spotted little yellow cheese crumbs right on the corner of Mouse's mouth. Cat knew exactly what had happened. He puffed up his fur, his eyes flashed, and he roared:

"How dare you steal my cheese! Now I'm going to eat YOU!"

Hearing Cat’s fierce roar, Mouse shook with fright. He scurried across the floor and zipped right into a tiny hole in the corner of the wall. Cat tried to chase after him, but his fluffy tummy was much too big to fit through the narrow opening. All Cat could do was sit outside the hole and wait for Mouse to come out. But clever little Mouse had already slipped away through a secret back door.

Ever since that very day, Cat has been searching everywhere for Mouse. And whenever Mouse sees Cat coming, he runs away in a panic as fast as his little legs can carry him!
